NAUGATUCK — The Board of Education last week approved hiring an additional fourth-grade teacher to alleviate class size issues at Salem Elementary School.

There are 55 fourth-graders and two fourth-grade classes at Salem Elementary School, meaning one class had 28 students and the other 27 students. The additional teacher will open up a third fourth-grade class, reducing class sizes to 18, 18 and 19.

According to information supplied to the board, the additional position won’t increase the school budget. Due to hiring new employees over the summer to fill vacancies, officials anticipate there will be a savings of $250,000 in salaries.
