NAUGATUCK — The state Bond Commission last month approved more than $2 million in funding for projects in Naugatuck.

The funding includes $1.08 million for the Board of Education.

The Bond Commission’s agenda for the Nov. 29 meeting states the money is for Alliance Districts, the lowest performing school districts in the state, to make general improvements to school buildings.

Superintendent of Schools Sharon Locke said the money is for a grant the board applied for in the spring. Locke directed specific questions about the project to Assistant Superintendent of Schools Christopher Montini. Montini did not return a message left seeking comment.

According to a memo from Montini to the Board of Education, about $700,000 will be used to upgrade student bathrooms at Cross Street Intermediate School, Hop Brook Elementary School, Maple Hill elementary school and western elementary school. The other $380,000 will be used to repair curbing, paving and sidewalks at Andrew Avenue Elementary School and City Hill Middle School.

The commission also approved $27,399 to reimburse the Naugatuck Police Department for body cameras and video storage devices.

The department was one of 14 police departments in the state to receive the funding, according to the commission’s agenda.

In addition, the commission approved a $1.2 million loan for the startup company, P2 Science, Inc.

P2 Science recently gained approval from the Zoning Commission to build a 400-square-foot accessory building next to the 27,000-square-foot former building at 162 Great Hill Road.

The company, which emerged out of Yale University’s Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, has developed a new process to convert natural materials into ingredients for flavors and fragrances, and is growing the company in Naugatuck.

The loan is intended to help P2 Science with buying machinery and equipment for its new plant, the agenda states. The loan is for ten years and has a 2 percent interest rate.
