A vehicle crashed into the gazebo on the Naugatuck Town Green over the weekend, causing of $1,000 in damage.

NAUGATUCK — The gazebo on the Town Green sustained $1,000 to $1,500 worth of damage after a truck or SUV slammed into it sometime either Friday or Saturday night, according to Public Works Superintendent Robert Roland.

The vehicle drove onto the Green from Divison Street and knocked the gazebo a foot and a half off its base, damaging some shrubs on the way, Roland said.

A public works employee didn’t discover the damage until Tuesday morning as they were picking up litter following the Columbus Day holiday, Roland said.

He said park employees will attempt to repair the gazebo, which was left with structural damage to some of its wood, later this week or early next week.

Roland said he notified police and the case is under investigation.

So far, no witnesses have come forward, but anyone with information about the incident can contact the Naugatuck police at (203) 729-5221.

Roland said he didn’t know if the damage was accidental or intentional, but skid marks on the grass suggest the driver was on the green intentionally.

“I think probably at the last minute when they attempted to exit the green the gazebo came up abruptly and stopped their exit,” Roland said.

The vehicle appears to have backed up after hitting the structure and exited the green on the corner of Meadow Street, he said.
