BERLIN — Connecticut Light & Power issued an alert to customers to be wary of a telephone scam.

In a release issued by CL&P, the company warned residents about a scam involving people calling CL&P customers claiming to be from the company and offering a “$40 rebate,” then requesting the customer’s account number and their Social Security number.

Anyone who receives such as call should never provide personal information to any unsolicited caller, even if the caller seems legitimate, and hang up the phone and report the incident to local police.

Anyone who questions the authenticity of a phone call or visit from a person claiming to be a representative of CL&P, should call customer service immediately at (800) 286-2000 and ask the customer service representative to verify the call or visit.
