Filing period open for tax credit program

PROSPECT — The filing period for local tax credits for elderly and totally disabled homeowners runs through May 15.

To qualify, residents must own and occupy their home. They must also have tuned 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2016 or be totally and permanently disabled as defined by Social Security. Residents must also meet income limits of $52,800 for a single person and $64,350 for couples. Proof of income must be provided.

The maximum credit under the town’s program is $400. It is also based upon percentage of ownership and years as a resident of Prospect.

To file an application for the tax credit, the applicant, a relative or agent must come to the Assessor’s Office at Town Hall, 36 Center St. For more information, call 203-758-4461.
