Neighbors called 911 after seeing smoke and fire on the front lawn and exterior of 77 Manners Ave. at 12:15 p.m. Firefighters knocked on the door and alerted the occupants to the fire.

Members of the Naugatuck Fire Department doused the flames, which were extinguished within minutes, using water from a nearby fire hydrant. They then checked the property thoroughly and ventilated smoke out of the two-family home, Fire Chief Ken Hanks said. Nobody was injured.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, he said, but he did not have the determination as of Thursday. Fire investigators spent much of the afternoon looking for a cause. They will likely make a determination in the next day or two.

The occupants were likely going to be able to remain in their home on Thursday. There was a hole in the siding near the front door that was roughly three feet in diameter.

The house, built in 1955, is owned by Joseph Mocerino of Stratford, according to Naugatuck land records.
