NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Housing Authority is set to receive an infusion of funds from the state.
State Senators Joan Hartley (D-15) and Joseph Crisco, Jr. (D-17) announced in a press release last week the state will be releasing $250,000 for the Naugatuck Housing Authority. According to the release, the money is on the State Bond Commission’s agenda for Dec. 13 and must be approved by the commission.
The senators said the money is earmarked for the Oak Terrace apartments, a public housing complex located off Conrad Street managed by the housing authority.
Christine Warren, executive director of the housing authority, said the money is for environmental testing and architectural plans, so the housing authority will be eligible for future funds through the State Housing Rehabilitation and Preservation program to perform apartment upgrades and site improvements at Oak Terrace.
“With specific reference to this grant, state funding for these preliminary expenses will provide momentum required to the benefit of both the residents as well as the larger community,” Hartley said in the release. “This Oak Terrace facility is accessible to downtown Naugatuck, local retail and support services, transportation options, and employment options for residents — building blocks for housing that will meet the needs of those who live there.”
Crisco added in the release, “This investment in local housing stock will pay dividends over the long term not only in terms of providing shelter for those who need it and improving their quality of life, but in terms of neighborhood stabilization and improving the local economy as well. An adequate supply of suitable housing is the foundation for a strong community.”
