NAUGATUCK — High winds knocked down trees throughout the region Wednesday, taking out power lines and blocking roads.

In Naugatuck, trees lay on wires at Salem Road near the intersection of Millville Avenue and took down a primary power line around 409 Cherry St., according to Deputy Fire Chief Paul Russell. Salem Road has been cleared, but Cherry Street was closed as of 4 p.m.

Two more trees fell across roads, on Webb Road near the intersection of Westover and where Westover comes out on Krodel Road, Russell said.

He said the trees hadn’t caused any injuries or property damage.

As of 5 p.m., 4,001 customers were without power in Naugatuck.

Eversource Energy spokesman Mitch Gross said a fallen tree took down a power line near a substation, and the company had to cut power to additional customers in order to complete repairs.

“We are working as quickly as we can to complete repairs and get everyone’s power back on,” Gross said.

It was unclear when power might be restored.

At 4:15 p.m. 734 customers in Beacon Falls were without power, but Eversource reported no power outages in Beacon Falls as of 5 p.m.
