NAUGATUCK — The cause of an explosion during the borough’s annual fireworks show July 2 remains under investigation, police said.

The explosion occurred at about 9:40 p.m., 10 minutes into the show at Breen Field. There was a detonation at the ground level where the fireworks were being set off, according to police. There were no injuries.

Police released a video of the explosion on Thursday.

The cause is being investigated by the Naugatuck Fire Marshal’s Office along with the Connecticut State Police and its explosive investigations unit, with assistance from the Naugatuck Police Department.

State police, who are leading the investigating, said Thursday there does not appear to be any evidence to suggest negligence or any criminal aspect to the case.

The incident is a reminder of the potential dangers of fireworks, especially is people are setting off illegal fireworks, Naugatuck police said. Complaints about illegal fireworks in Naugatuck have increased this year.

In Connecticut, sparklers and fountains, which produce sparks when lit, are legal, but cannot be sold or used by anyone younger than 16. Devices that fly or explode, including firecrackers, skyrockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles and any firework containing any explosive or flammable compound, are illegal in Connecticut.

  1. The person that made the decision to set the remainder off past midnight needs a drug test, but quick.
