BEACON FALLS — A man was thrown from his motorcycle after crashing on Route 8 south Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred at about 3:15 p.m. Howard Brainard, 60, of 54 Birchbank Road, Shelton was driving through the S-turns between Exits 25 and 24 in Beacon Falls when he lost control of his 1990 Yamaha VMX12.

Jeremy Rodorigo, spokesman for Beacon Hose Company No. 1, said Brainard hit the guardrail and was thrown from the motorcycle down the embankment. He landed by the edge of the Naugatuck River, Rodorigo said.

“It was a very serious accident,” Rodorigo said.

The Naugatuck Fire Department was called to scene to assist in rescuing Brainard.

Naugatuck Fire Chief Ken Hanks said firefighters pulled Brainard up using a “basket” after stabilizing his back and neck. Brainard was talking to firefighters at the scene, Hanks said.

State police said in a news release from Troop I in Bethany that Brainard suffered a broken right foot. He was taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment. He was subsequently transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital, according to a spokesman for Waterbury Hospital.

About 90 feet of the metal beam guard rail was damaged, state police said. The motorcycle was totaled and had to be towed from the scene, state police said. Route 8 south between Exits 24 and 25 was closed for about an hour due to the accident.

Brainard was found at fault and was issued a written warning, state police said.
