NAUGATUCK — Police have closed a Cherry Street building after an envelope with a white unknown powder was mailed to one of the building’s residents.

At about 8 p.m. last night, the resident who lives on the second floor of 123 Cherry St. reported she received a letter in the mail that contained an unknown white powder, according to police.

The Naugatuck police and fire departments responded to the scene. The Department of Environmental Protection was contacted as well, due to established procedures. Police said the DEP in turn contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The substance was removed and taken to the Department of Public Health’s laboratory for analysis, police said. Police said the preliminary analysis can take up to 48 hours to complete.

The building, including Mario’s Pizzeria on the first floor, has been closed pending the laboratory results, police said.

Police said the incident does not appear to be a criminal matter at this time.

“All involved agencies are cooperating to resolve this matter as quickly as possible,” stated a press release issued by the police department.
