NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Fire Department is now equipped with another life-saving tool: Narcan.

Narcan, also known as Naloxone, is a drug used to treat opioid overdose. In 2014, the state passed a law that allowed first responders to carry and use Narcan.

The fire department recently held an in-house training session on the proper use of Narcan in advance of equipping firefighters with the drug.

Fire Chief Ellen Murray said this is the first time the department will be carrying Narcan.

The department decided to begin carrying it because it wanted to ensure it can help someone during an opioid overdose, she said.
