NAUGATUCK — Mrs. Marie (Messenger) Ippolito, 72, of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2016, in the VITAS Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital after complications from PSP. She was the wife of Samuel Ippolito.

Mrs. Ippolito, formerly Sr. Mary Arthur, S.S.J., was born Feb. 18, 1943 in Rochester, N.Y., a daughter of the late Arthur and Agnes (Hurrman) Messenger. She was a communicant of St. Vincent Ferrer Church, Naugatuck, where she also taught CCD, and was also a communicant of St. Edward’s Roman Catholic Church in Derby Line, Vt. She was a graduate of Charter Oak College where she was a founding member of the Alumnae Association. She wrote a food column for the Naugatuck Daily News and won the state Apple Pie Baking Contest.

Mrs. Ippolito is retired after working as a LPN at Masonicare in Newtown. She also formerly worked for many years as a service consultant for AT&T, a service rep for S.P. Skinner Co., in Waterbury, a CNA at Laurel Gardens of Woodbridge and a communications department head at St. Francis Hospital.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Ippolito is survived by her children, Joan Reilly and her husband Tim of Naugatuck and Arthur Ippolito and his wife Vittoria of Naugatuck; eight grandchildren, Mary, Erin, Joseph, Luke, Daniel, Anne, Salvatore, Ingrid and Antonio. Her sister Petronella Varel resides in Rochester, N.Y. She also leaves many nephews, nieces and friends who made her life such a joy. She was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Sassenhausen.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent Ferrer Church, 1006 New Haven Road, Naugatuck. Family and friends are asked to please meet directly at the church. Burial will be in Morgan, Vt. at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. The Prospect Memorial Funeral, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect is in charge of the arrangements.
