NAUGATUCK — Police investigated a report of a suspicious person with an object, possibly a firearm, in the woods outside Salem Elementary School on Thursday afternoon.

Officers responded to the elementary school on Meadow Street after receiving the report shortly after noon. Salem, along with nearby Hillside Intermediate School and Tender Years Preschool, went into lockdown as a precaution.

Deputy Police Chief Colin McAllister said police searched the area, but did not find anything suspicious.

“There’s nothing to substantiate it being a credible report of a person with a firearm,” McAllister said.

Police will maintain a presence in the area to reassure students, staff and families, he said.
