NAUGATUCK — Two teenagers were arrested Wednesday after police say they fled on foot from a stolen car.

Police said officers responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Valley Drive at about 1 a.m. When officers arrived, police said, the driver of the car — a 2014 brown Honda CRV that was stolen from East Haven — sped off. Officers located the car in the backyard of a home on Cotton Hollow Road, a dead end street, a short time later and saw multiple people running from the car.

As officers searched the area, state police caught two suspects — a 17-year-old and 15-year-old — on Route 8 near Cross Street. Police charged the teenagers, whose names weren’t released due to their ages, with second-degree criminal trover, second-degree larceny and third-degree criminal mischief. They were both released on a promise to appear and given a court date of Aug. 12.

Deputy Chief C. Colin McAllister said two or three other suspects are believed to be involved in the incident. He said the incident is consistent with car break-ins in the area and officers are going through items that were in the stolen Honda to determine whether anything was stolen from other vehicles.
