PROSPECT – The town voted to buy a new mower to replace a 27-year-old beast on its last legs.

“We take care of them, but we just can’t get parts, so it’s time,” said Mayor Bob Chatfield said.

The John Deere 5083E All Season Cab Roadside Mower with an Alamo cutter, which will be funded on next year’s budget, was approved unanimously at a town meeting April 20.

The $98,222 cost of the new roadside mower will be financed without a trade-in with a four year lease at $27,472 per year.

Chatfield touted the advantages of the new mower, besides the fact that it is less likely to fall apart in the near future. The new mower will have an all-season cab with heat and air conditioning so it may be used throughout the summer and into the fall and winter. The mower’s blades are on a 19-foot arm that can reach over fences to cut grass along fence lines, according to Chatfield. It also has four-wheel drive, making it possible to double as a snow thrower, with a special attachment sold separately.
