NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck firefighters arriving at a home on Bluebird Drive on Sunday night saw homeowners outside spraying the side of their house with a garden hose in an attempt to extinguish a small fire.
Their efforts kept the flames at bay long enough for firefighters to arrive and knock it down with fire hoses, firefighters said.
The incident at 237 Bluebird Drive was reported at 7:55 p.m. When firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke in the basement but no sign of fire. The homeowners were spraying the outside of the home, where smoke was pouring out, firefighters said.
Lt. Al Beltrami said firefighters used thermal-imaging equipment to determine exactly where the fire was inside the walls. They then cut into the walls to access the flames and began extinguishing them. The fire was knocked down quickly.
Nobody was injured and no one was displaced. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The home is owned by Joseph and Jodi Payne, according to land records.
