A suspicious device resembling a military mortar shell was inert, according to police.
A passerby saw the device in the window of Ye Olde Wine Shoppe, 72 Church Street Jan. 5 around 2:55 p.m.
“We’re pretty confident it’s safe,” Lt. Robert Harrison said as the bomb squad finished up their investigation.
Police evacuated the area and called a bomb squad from the Connecticut State Police, according to Harrison.
Police closed Church Street between Rubber Avenue and Park Place, but reopened the street around 5:30 p.m.
Police will continue to investigate why the device was placed in the window, Harrison said.
The store has been closed for several months. Christopher Clark, the store’s owner, owes $5,474.42 in property taxes dating back to 2006, according to tax records.
This is not the first bomb scare involving Clark.
He was arrested Dec. 16 and is currently awaiting a Jan. 19 court date to respond to charges of illegal possession of explosives and failure to keep narcotics in the original container, according to court records.
