PROSPECT — A garbage truck hit multiple wires on Dorothy Avenue Friday morning, causing utility workers to turn off power to a section of town amid other outages to  remove live wires that fell on the truck.

Ed Malaspina, a firefighter and public information officer with the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department, said the truck hit service wires at around 10:20 a.m. near 3 Dorothy Ave. He said the live wires fell on the truck, trapping one person inside.

Mayor Robert Chatfield, who is also the day commander for the fire department, said he spotted utility crews in the parking lot of St. Anthony Church across from Prospect Town Hall as he responded to the call and asked for their help.

Utility workers turned off the power to the area to remove the wires and get the driver in the truck out. The driver was not injured, Malaspina said.

Officials said the wires need to be fixed before power to the area can be restored.

Eversource reported there were 2,711 Prospect customers without power, or about 64% of the town, as of 1 p.m., more than double the number of outages reported at 7 a.m.
