PROSPECT — The State Elections Enforcement Commission has approved a public campaign grant for Republican candidate for state representative Lezlye Zupkus.

Zupkus is challenging Democrat state Rep. Vickie Nardello for the state House seat in the 89th District, which covers Prospect, Bethany, and a portion of Cheshire.

To qualify for the Citizen’s Election Program candidates have to raise $5,000 in small contributions and have at least 150 donors that reside in the towns within their district.

The approval of the application means the Zupkus campaign will receive a grant of $26,850. Zupkus’ report submitted more than 215 donations totaling $5,335.

“I’m happy with the overwhelming support I’ve received and I’m encouraged that so many people want me to run for the seat,” Zupkus said in a press release. “As I speak with the voters in the district and listen to their concerns, it’s clear that we have to change the way the Hartford crowd is operating. Our residents worry everyday that they will be hit with another tax bill from Hartford. People can’t afford it and are fed up.”

Zupkus continued, “Our state and specially our district needs a fresh vision to help bring jobs to Connecticut and get our state working again. I will bring some common sense and balance back to the Connecticut legislature.”

The grant gives Zupkus a total of $31,850 to run her 2012 campaign, the release stated.
