Irene C. (Grenick) Slabicki

NAUGATUCK — Irene C. (Grenick) Slabicki, 94, widow of Walter P. Slabicki, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at her home.

Irene was born in Waterbury on Sept. 24, 1924, daughter of the late Joseph and Emelia (Rokowicz) Grenick. She was a graduate of Wilby High School, Class of 1942. She resided in Naugatuck for over 65 years and was employed as welfare director of the Borough of Naugatuck for over 19 years. Irene was a proud member of St. Hedwig’s Ladies Guild, St. Hedwig Church Parish Council, where she served as recording and corresponding secretary, and the Seymour Senior Center.

She enjoyed traveling the country with her husband Walter, cooking and baking, knitting, crocheting, gardening, creating soft sculpture and porcelain dolls, and 3D paper sculpture pictures. Irene was a fan of the New York Yankees, Washington Redskins, and UConn women and men’s basketball. She especially enjoyed her casino trips.

Her faith carried her throughout her life and she has been blessed with many dear friends. She was proud of both her daughters and her son-in-law, who was like a son to her.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Denise Carrington and her husband, Brian; nine nieces and nephews; 20 great-nieces and great-nephews; and many great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Atty. Diane E. Slabicki; her brother, Stanley Grenick; her sisters, Jennie Romanski and Mary Garthwait; sister-in-law, Margaret
Brezowicz; brothers-in-law, Chester Romanski, John Garthwait and Frank Brezowicz; and niece, Margaret (Brezowicz) Fellers.

Special thanks to Dr. Kangaratnam Jega and Dr. Henry Borkowski for their many years of caring. The family wishes to thank her dedicated caregivers, Bernadeta and Malgorzata, and the staff at VITAS.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 10 a.m. from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald-Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck, to St. Hedwig Church, 32 Golden Hill St., Naugatuck, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Members of St. Hedwig’s Ladies Guild will meet at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m.
