NAUGATUCK — Marie (Santos) Carbon, 86, wife of the late Donald Carbon and beloved mother to Doreen and her husband, Bryan Costantino, Leslie and her husband, Fred Dlugokecki, and the late Wayne Fernandes, passed away on May 3, 2020, following a long battle with health issues.

In addition to her daughters, she is survived by her sister, Issy Cwynar; and the lights of her life, her four grandchildren, Tyler and Kendra Costantino, Felicia and her husband, Bodie Orman, and Nicholas Moniz; as well as, several nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Esmenia Santos; and her two sisters, Alice Francisco and Anna Ruzzy.

Born in Murtosa, Portugal, on March 16, 1934, she spent her early years in the country she remembered so fondly before immigrating to the states and her life in Naugatuck. Leaving school at an early age to begin work to assist her family, she returned in her mid-life to complete her high school education, an achievement that gave her great pleasure. She worked for many years at Uniroyal and later at Peter Paul Cadbury in Naugatuck where she made many lifelong friends. Having to retire early due to health issues, she remained active and committed to living a full life.

Besides being a devoted mother to her three children, she was a faithful follower of Jehovah and dedicated her life to her family, friends and congregation. Marie enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and will be long remembered for her baking skills, especially the mounds of cookies that she baked for special occasions. She was known to have a lively spirit and a radiant smile. Her petite stature belied her strong will, self-reliance and determination to achieve her goals. Her heart was always open to those less fortunate and her long-standing health issues did not prevent her from reaching out to others in need.

No services will be held at this time due to the social distancing requirements. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald-Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Those who wish to remember Marie in a personal way may make donations in her memory to a charity of their choice that serves those in need in the Naugatuck/Waterbury communities.
