Cheerleaders heading to national championships, Hawks win state titles

The Woodland Jr. Hawks D12 cheer team will compete in the American Youth Cheer national (AYC) championships Dec. 8-9 in Orlando, Fla. after placing second at the New England Region AYC Cheer Championships Nov. 17 in New Hampshire.

The team advanced to the regional championships after placing third in the small white division at the Connecticut State Cheer Championships Nov. 3 in New Haven. The team includes players from Naugatuck, Prospect, Beacon Falls and Waterbury. Kelly Mento and Chelsea Maza coached the team with junior demonstrator Alexis Yoxall.

The Woodland Jr. Hawks 11U football team beat New Britain, 24-18, in overtime Nov. 4 at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport to win the Connecticut Youth Football and Cheer Conference state championship.

The team includes players from Naugatuck, Prospect, Beacon Falls and Waterbury. Jason Pringle, Gregory Barksdale, Billy Evers and David Dugan coached the am, with the help of ‘team moms,’ including Kari Reopelle and Erin Pringle.

The Woodland Jr. Hawks D10 cheer team won the American Youth Cheer (AYC) state championship in the small white division at the Connecticut State Cheer Championships Nov. 3 in New Haven.

The team advanced to the New England Region AYC Cheer Championships Nov. 17 in New Hampshire, where the girls finished sixth. The cheer team includes players from Naugatuck, Prospect, Beacon Falls and Waterbury. Stephanie Snyder and Ashley Frenette coached the team with junior demonstrator Emma Lugo.
