BEACON FALLS — With the dual-meet season in the rear view, the Woodland boys swim team has its sight set on the Naugatuck Valley League championships.
The Hawks finished up the regular season last week with a defeat against Naugatuck. That meet was Feb. 13, and the NVL swim trials are set for Tuesday at Kennedy High. That means a full two weeks for Woodland’s swimmers to get in top shape for the championship season.
Woodland’s top individual swimmers at the league championships are expected to be Greg Aldrich (breaststroke and individual medley) and Jake Stow (backstroke). Earlier this month, Woodland coach Tom Currier also pointed toward Jeff Varesio and Chase Chura as swimmers whose times were steadily dropping toward competitive numbers.
Currier did not return a message seeking comment leading up to the league championships.
The Hawks’ best hope will be in Wednesday’s diving competition, also at Kennedy. Woodland boasts the defending NVL champion, Riley Clark. Clark won last year’s title as a sophomore by just 1.05 points. Earlier this season, he broke his existing school record in the six-dive event. He’ll look to continue that success in the 11-dive version at the league meet.
The top swimmers who qualify at Tuesday’s trials will advance to Friday’s league finals. That event begins at 4:30 p.m. at Kennedy High.
