Girls’ Soccer

There was no letdown for the Naugatuck girls following their thrilling, season-opening victory over Holy Cross, as the Hounds took care of business in Wolcott last Thursday, wrapping up a 4-0 shutout of the Eagles. Stephanie Santos led the Garnet and Grey with a pair of goals, while Sara Tarsi and the hero from the Hounds’ win over the Crusaders, Sarah Magnamo, each found the net once. Jessica Johnson stopped five shots to preserve the shutout and run Naugy’s opponents’ scoreless drought to a full 160 minutes. After a matchup with Sacred Heart Wednesday, the Greyhounds head to Municipal Stadium on Saturday evening for a much-anticipated rematch with Holy Cross, which could potentially give Naugatuck a sizeable advantage over the Green and Gold in the NVL Copper Division race. Naugy follows with its first out-of-league matchup Sept. 30, when it hosts Norwich Free Academy.

Cross Country

The Naugy boys took a solid first step in the right direction toward defending their NVL championship in Tuesday’s first meet in the borough. The Hounds easily beat both Seymour (22-39) and Torrington (22-46), led by the first-place finish of Nick Moriello in a time of 18:03. The Greyhounds placed seven runners in the top ten, including Jeff Dorosh (third in 18:33), Ralph Liguori (fifth in 18:40), Erik DeSousa (sixth in 18:52), Tommy Mashia (eighth in 19:25), Evan Sizemore (ninth in 19:26), and Jake Simons (10th in 19:27). The girls also posted a solid performance, easily handling Torrington, 19-36, but narrowly losing to Seymour, 26-29. All-stater Rosa Moriello dominated the race, finishing more than three minutes better than Seymour’s best runner with a time of 19:37. Shelby Hale finished sixth for Naugy in 23:49, followed by Becky Renzoni in seventh (24:07), Gabby Moriello in ninth (24:52), and Samantha Hilse in 10th (25:01). The long-distance runners are back in action Tuesday at Montoe Park in Waterbury in a tri-meet with Wolcott and Crosby.
