Naugy’s new triple threats

Naugatuck senior Tyler Blair showed his strength and skill as he won all three throwing events in the Greyhounds’ season-opening track meet against Wolcott and Torrington. Blair took first in the shot put (37-11), the javelin (127-4) and in the discus (106-10.)

Naugatuck senior Erin Schofield was a triple threat in the second track meet of the season against Crosby and Wilby on Saturday. She finish first in the shot put (28-10), the discus (61-3) and the javelin (93-3).

Striking out Wildcats

Woodland junior Matt Szturma had his strikeout pitch working for him in Saturday’s 7-3 win over Wilby. Szturma struck out 12 batters and at one point had seven K’s in a row.

Senior leader

Naugatuck senior Matt Triscritti has quickly become an integral part of the boys tennis team, which started the season 3-0. Triscritti is undefeated at the No. 5 seed and has helped Naugy to overcome early deficits by pulling out an 8-6 tie breaker over Woodland and an 8-5 win over Watertown.

Productive hitter

Woodland senior Meredith Dyckman produced at the plate in the Hawks’ 16-3 win over Sacred Heart last Friday. Dyckman belted two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs.

Naugy Notes

Golf

The Greyhounds got the season underway on Monday with a 181-232 loss to Wolcott at the Farmingbury Country Club. Colin Sheedy led Naugatuck shooting a 46. Zach Monck (51), Samantha Royka (65) and Derek McGrath (70) rounded out the scoring for Naugatuck (0-1). Naugatuck was scheduled to play Seymour on Thursday. The Greyhounds will host Watertown at Hop Brook on Monday.

Track and Field

The boys track team opened the season with a 136-14 win over Wolcott and a 102.5-47.5 over Torrington on April 5. Tyler Blair won the javelin, discus and shot put. Zachary Koslosky was a double-winner in the pole vault and 110 hurdles. Rami Ammar won the 400, Jayden Anderson won the 300 hurdles, Ross Via won the 800, Luis Garces won the 3200, and Ben Healy won the triple jump. The boys improved to 4-0 with a 106-43 win over Crosby and a 121-28 win over Wilby on Saturday. Blair was a double-winner in the discus and the shot put. Ammar was a double-winner in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Via was a double-winner in the 800 and 1600. Healy was a double-winner in the triple jump and the high jump, and Koslosky won the pole vault.

The girls fell to Wolcott, 73-65, and Torrington, 85-57, in the season-opener. Renell Clarence was a double-winner in the 200 and 400. Macie Best won the triple jump, and Erin Schofield won the javelin. The girls bounced back on Saturday and evened their record at 2-2 with a sweep of Crosby, 134-15, and Wilby, 133-15. Schofield was a triple-winner in the shot put, discus and javelin. Addison Best was a double-winner in the long jump and triple jump. Alyssa Zarrella was a double-winner in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Lauren Stankiewicz was a double-winner in the 1600 and 3200. Krystina Huculak won the 400. Macie Best won the high jump. Daniella Acevedo won the pole vault. The boys and girls will be back in action April 17 at Holy Cross to take on the Crusaders and Woodland.

Word from the Woods

Golf

The Hawks were scheduled to open the season Tuesday against Crosby. The results of the match weren’t reported as of this post. Woodland was scheduled to play Kennedy and Wilby on Thursday. The Hawks will host Sacred Heart on April 17 at Oxford Greens.

Track and Field

The boys track team defeated Watertown, 95-55, and Crosby, 103-45, to open the season on April 5. Matt Luxeder was a double-winner in the 400 and 800. Jack LaPerriere won the long jump and triple jump. Craig Starkey won the pole vault, Maciej Lewicki won the 110 hurdles, and Isiah Miller won the 300 hurdles. The boys improved to 4-0 on Tuesday by beating Torrington, 105-45, and Oxford, 127-18. Individual event winners included Luxeder in the 400 and 800, Vincent Costanzo in the 1600 and 3200, Quincy Koch in the 110 hurdles, Ben Nuss in the 200, and Tom Smith in the 100.

The girls track team is also 4-0. The Hawks opened the season with a 135-11 win over Crosby and a 91-59 win over Watertown. Erika Michie was a double-winner in the 100 and 200 meters. Kristen Persico was a double-winner in the shot put and javelin. Jade Brennan won the 400, Meg Sirowich won the 800, Jordan Williams won the 100 hurdles, Stephanie McLean won the discus, and Alexandra Cianciolo won the triple jump. The Hawks cruised past Torrington, 110-40, and Oxford, 104-46, on Tuesday. Michie won the 100 and 200, Brennan won the 400, and Sirowich won the 800 for the second straight meet. Persico took first in the javelin and discus, and Emilie Noreika won the pole vault. The boys and girls will be at Holy Cross on April 17 to take on the Crusaders and Naugatuck.
