Johnson State sophomore Andrea Mercer, the former Naugatuck Greyhound, scored her first collegiate goal in the Badgers’ 9-0 opening season win over Vermont Tech on Sept. 1.

Never give up

Woodland junior running back Edit Krivca never gave up, even with the Hawks trailing 30-20 entering the fourth quarter against Crosby in the season opener on Sept. 8. Krivca led Woodland to a 34-30 come-from-behind win, churning up 169 yards on the ground and four touchdowns.

Making a difference

UConn sophomore Alexa Casimiro, the former Woodland soccer player, has made the most of her opportunities for the Huskies. Casimiro scored her first goal of the season as UConn edged out Arkansas, 2-1, last week to improve to 2-3-2 on the season.

Pick 6 seals the deal

Naugatuck junior Nick Airall secured the Greyhounds’ 35-20 season-opening win over Derby Sept. 8 with a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown for the final score of the game. Airall also scored the final touchdown of the first half on a 23-yard run to give the Hounds a slim 14-12 lead at the half.

Career-high earns accolade

Worcester Polytechnic Institute sophomore Sean McAllen was named the WPI Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week. The former Woodland Hawk ran for a career best 246 yards on just 15 carries and rushed for four touchdowns in a season-opening 48-0 win over Anna Maria on Sept. 1. McAllen also caught two passes for 19 yards.

Girls swimming

Naugatuck gets the season underway on Friday against the Raiders at the YMCA pool in Torrington. The Greyhounds have two NVL home meets next week. The will face St. Paul on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Oxford on Friday at 4 p.m.

The Hawks opened the season last Friday with a 96-90 win over Jonathan Law of Milford at the Foran High School pool. Woodland secured the victory by winning the 400 freestyle relay with Dia Gawronski, Brooke Pope, Jordan Williams and Kyla Drewry finishing first (4:11.94). The 200 medley foursome of Williams, Gawronski, Drewry and Pope also took first (2:04.50). Gawronski won the 200 freestyle (2:04.89) and the 500 freestyle (5:24.40). Pope won the 50 freestyle (26.66) and the 100 freestyle (59.18). Woodland improved to 2-0 with a 94-81 win over Windsor Locks on Tuesday. The 200 medley team of Williams, Gawronski, Drewry and Pope set a school record with a time of 2:02.98. Gawronski also earned wins in the 200 IM (2:16.69) and 100 fly (1:01.88). The 200 free relay team of Gawronski, Drewry, Aly Rojcov and Pope finished first (1:49.40). Casey Brooks won the 200 free (2:21.38). Pope took firsts in the 50 free (26.89). Maddie Hoxie won the diving competition (160). Woodland is scheduled to host Suffield on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Next week, the Hawks will host Watertown on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and visit Seymour on Friday at 4 p.m.
