Robert A. Cole reaches District 3 finals

Robert A. Cole Little League of Beacon Falls advanced to the finals of the District 3 tournament last week.

After an opening-game loss to Seymour, Cole won four straight to make it to the championship round. After the first loss to Seymour, head coach Chris Anderson told the team to make the most of the experience.

“I told them in the dugout after the game that this loss would not define who we are,” Anderson said. “I asked them to write their story of who they are throughout the rest of the tournament.”

The team responded.

Cole run-ruled Derby, beat Union City 5-4 on their home field, shut out Prospect 2-0 and then won an extra-inning game, 9-8, against Peter J. Foley. Cole came back to beat Foley after trailing in their final at bat.

Robert A. Cole players were Tyler Ciavarella, Andrew Rowley, Joey Giuliani, Mike Szturma, Matt Koliani, Jayden Tomasella, Nathaniel Smith, Tyler Bulinski, Jason Palmieri, Cameron Heeman, Brady Anderson, Tyler Mei and Ben Brooks.

Foley wins two games in district tourney

Peter J. Foley Little League of Naugatuck won two games in the District tournament before being eliminated by Robert A. Cole.

Jonathan Chatfield struck out 10 in four innings, and Sean Doxsey and Joe Grailich pitched in relief as Foley defeated Prospect, 4-3. Justin Stone had a double, walk and scored two runs. Chatfield and Grailich also homered.

Doxey pitched five innings in a 7-4 win over Union City. Chatfield, Grailich and Nate Delaney homered, while Stone walked twice and scored two runs. Matt Borsey, James Duda and Jake Murphy had singles.

Seymour shutout Foley, 7-0, on July 13. Delaney, Stone and Peter Mullin had hits for Foley.

In the 9-8 loss to Robert A. Cole on July 15, Chatfield, Delaney and Mullin had two hits each. David Green and Mason Bedard also had hits.

The team was managed by Ken Stone, who was assisted by Chip Delaney and Ryan Murphy.
